Integrating live music, contemporary dance, theatre design and digital art, Arvoles Lloran por Luvia was my first multimedia theatre production. It premiered with a three-night run at Battersea Music Hall in October 2013.
Based around a suite of medieval Sephardic folk ballads re-imagined for electro-acoustic chamber ensemble Sefiroth, the performance weaves the intensely poetic Ladino lyrics of the songs into an epic narrative, a timeless story of love, loss, migration and yearning for home.
Drawing upon the ancient mysticism and symbolism of the Kabbalist tree of life, six contemporary dancers choreographed by Katarzyna Witek represent both the characters in the songs and the manifestations of the divine according to Jewish lore.
Maya Angeli's innovative production design incorporates digital projection by SDNA, with stunning lighting by Sherry Coenen.
